Violence Prevention

Four Teens in a row

Breaking cycles of violence through connection, healing, and opportunity.

What is Beyond Violence?

Beyond Violence is a hospital-based violence intervention program that connects youth trauma patients with trained Community Intervention Specialists.

Through one-on-one mentorship, case management, and care coordination, participants receive the support they need to heal, rebuild, and re-engage in positive community life.

This program bridges hospital care with long-term community recovery — ensuring that a violent incident becomes the turning point, not a repeated pattern.

Eligibility

  • Youth and young adults ages 15–25 treated at John Muir Hospital for intentional injuries (gunshot, stabbing, assault, etc.) occurring in East Contra Costa County.
  • Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis.

Program Objectives

  • Improve educational attainment
  • Increase employability and workforce readiness
  • Support access to healthcare and social services
  • Strengthen social and professional skills
  • Build sustainable support networks
  • Reduce recidivism and prevent retaliation

Program Highlights

  • Immediate Response:
Intervention Specialists respond within 24 hours of hospital notification, meeting clients at their bedside to begin trust-building and crisis intervention.
  • Intensive Case Management:
Each specialist maintains a small caseload (no more than 17 clients), ensuring personalized support through hospital, home, and school visits — including transportation assistance and help with essential needs.
  • Comprehensive Support:
Clients receive direct aid for food, identification fees, housing applications, and other critical needs through the program’s discretionary client fund.
  • Ongoing Accountability:
Progress is tracked through detailed reporting and regular evaluation in partnership with John Muir Health.

High-Level Results

  • 97% of clients did not retaliate
  • 94% avoided re-injury
  • 91% avoided arrest

These outcomes show the transformative impact of intervention rooted in empathy, trust, and consistent community support.
